today I want an Ivy League library

28 Nov

In these rare moments where I actually deign to dig through my purse for my ID card and spend time in the library – usually because I have to print something – I desperately wish that I went to a school where our library looked like this:

(Harvard’s library, which has been around since 1638)

And not like this:

I’m thinking this would definitely encourage me to study more. But don’t worry Biola, I still love you.

today I want to meet koko

8 Nov

This is the same Koko we all saw documentaries about in elementary school, right? Anyway, for those of you who don’t know, Koko is a forty-year-old female gorilla who understands about 2,000 words of spoken English and knows how to communicate using about 1,000 American Sign Language gestures. She was born at the San Francisco Zoo in 1971 and lives in San Mateo County, California. It’s unclear whether Koko really understands the meanings of the signs she uses or whether she just knows that using certain ones will result in a reward from her trainers or other people, almost like a dog knows that when she sits on command she’ll get a treat, but many primates have been proven to be smarter than dogs – and Koko also has been known to use signs in ways that she hasn’t been taught, and in circumstances where there may be no reward for her communication. For instance, no one ever taught Koko the word “ring”, but she did know the signs for “finger” and “bracelet”, and once combined them to refer to a ring – “finger-bracelet”.

Watching Koko’s behavior in this video, it’s difficult to believe that she only uses the communicative signs she has been taught to get something from her trainers. At various points during her interaction with Robin Williams, she seems to understand enjoyment, curiosity, affection, and humor. I doubt it’s possible to get to meet Koko unless you’re Robin Williams or something (why don’t people contact ME asking me if I want to meet famous and smart gorillas?? Because I do!) but that would be one of the coolest things I could think of. Except I would probably start crying and Koko would think I was a big baby.

today I [also] love tangentsandthe.tumblr

3 Nov

Marissa A. Ross, one of my favorite contributors on HelloGiggles and writer of the blog Tangents and the Times, also has a Tumblr, tangentsandthe.tumblr. 99% of her posts are reblogged or found photos, and the way they all look clumped together on her endlessly scrolling page is so, so good. I just saved about 82752752 of them to my computer – here are some of my favorites:

today I love unique and quirky home goods

3 Nov

I am a huge fan of Fred Flare. I don’t remember when I first heard about this site, but it is so awesome. It is stocked with cool and quirky stuff and it’s perfect for offbeat gifts for any occasion that will elicit a gleeful “WHERE DID YOU GET THIS?!” I swear they have something for everyone. Some of the best stuff is in the “At Home” section – I wanted to share some of my favorite products with you. And…if you get one of these for me for Christmas, I’ll pretend I don’t know where it’s from and shower you with gratitude! (Click on the picture to see the product on the Fred Flare site.)

Bottle Opener Ring
I would wear this to every party. I love things I can wear that are also really useful. I’m huge on utility.

Shark Fin Shower Cap
Okay, I would never actually buy this, but the fact that it exists just fills me with glee.

Matryoshka Doll Measuring Spoons
The kitchen accessory you’ll be “Russian” to use.

Heart-Shaped Measuring Cups
I’ve been lusting after these for years – too bad it seems like a waste of money to buy something one of my roommates already has. But I have my heart (ha) set on getting them for my first post-college home.

Mustache Corkscrew
Do I even have to explain this one?

today I designate a sleeping room

26 Sep

My friend Brianna, who just moved away to Boulder to go to school, told me that while she was touring campuses, she found out that at some schools there’s such a thing as a separate sleeping room for students. Basically, instead of the typical college dorm format of rooms with several beds and desks and maybe room for a couch and TV, the students’ separate dorms are just for studying and hanging out, and the designated “sleeping rooms” (or whatever they’re called, I can’t find any information or pictures on them anywhere) are big rooms full of beds that are always kept dark or dim, and they are for nothing except sleeping. No homework, no talking, just sweet, sweet sleep.

For almost my whole life, my bedroom has been my sanctuary to do everything, but in the house I moved into a month ago, there’s no room for anything in my room except for my bed, my roommates’ bunk bed, two nightstands, and a small dresser. Therefore my huge desk and all my other furniture and things are in the living room or spread around the house. So now pretty much all I do in my bedroom is get dressed, sleep, and occasionally relax while reading or doing homework. It seems like either Chloe or Sarah are always napping in there, and most days we keep the blinds closed all day long, so it’s always nice and dim and cool and peaceful in there. It’s kind of been making me be really attracted to the idea of a separate sleeping room. Especially once we get curtains, that room will be so nice and relaxing to sleep, and I rarely hang out in there anyway – there’s no room. I love the days when we don’t open the blinds and I would love it if that was all the time and we just hung out and studied in the living room all the time. It’s making me want to pour all of my time and money into making that room as dark and peaceful as possible. I’m thinking blackout curtains. I’m thinking throw pillows everywhere. I’m thinking a whole ton of blankets. I’m thinking mandatory daily naps. I’m thinking I might go to sleep now.

today I want a pet sloth

12 Sep

File this under the “nearly impossible” dreams list. Well, okay, it’s not impossible, but apparently sloths are EXTREMELY rare in the United States and run about $5,000. Yeah, okay. They’re also supposed to be kind of a hassle to take care of, except for the fact that they sleep most of the day and only poop once a month and expel 1/3 of their body weight all at once. Cool/gross and that’s a lot of poop. I think it’s easier to get one in South America – yet another reason for me to move there, since all I want to do right now is get my hands on one of these and spend the whole entire day cuddling with it. Dang. I guess I’ll settle for obsessing over these pictures for now…

Edited to add: If these pictures didn’t convince you of the adorableness and value of sloths, this video of the sloths at the world’s only sloth orphanage, the Sloth Sanctuary of Costa Rica, will. And if this video doesn’t convince you, you have no heart.
